How do you tell your kids that there’s evil in the world? How do you tell your kids that there’s life beyond that box of Crayola crayons? How do you tell your kids that there are children who barely eat once a week? Do you even tell them at all? Do you let them find out for themselves? Is there a certain age?
The thought came to me in a dream recently. In the dream, I had a brother who had special needs. My brother and I were playing on a playground, when out of nowhere, a man appeared with two kids; neither of them had special needs. He approached my dad and asked him one simple question: “How do you tell your kids that not everything’s alright in the world?” referring to my brother. It is evident that the special needs brother of mine was in no way evil, but the question lingered with me into the next day. How do you tell your kids that not everything is as it seems? How do you tell your kids that there are people who are a bit different from them?
There comes a time when kids need to realize that there’s suffering, death, abuse, and poverty. But, at what point is it justifiable to tell your kid? Do you raise them, telling them as soon as they’ll understand, in hopes they’ll be educated? Do you teach your kids everyone is the same in hopes of them being humble?
How do you tell an innocent mind, so consumed with his or her toys and crayons, that world exists beyond that?
