For a lot of people March means the beginning of warmer weather, St. Patrick’s Day, and the anticipation of spring break. For many sports fans around the country, March means something different. Around this time of year college basketball starts a tournament where 64 teams will fight to determine the National Champion.  The bracket is divided into 4 separate brackets seeded #1-16, #1 being the best. People across the country start to fill out their brackets in hopes of making the perfect bracket. If you fill out a perfect bracket in Yahoo’s competition, you would win $1 billion (the odds of a perfect bracket are 1 in 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 or 1 in 9.2 quintillion). There are also other websites that will give money to the most correct bracket. The way the bracket works is the #1 team would play the #16 team in their bracket, #2 would play #15 and so on. In theory, the higher seeded team should win every time, but in the 1st round they only win 71.9% of the time. Some of these upsets are known as “Bracket Busters”. In the end, you could know every single statistic about college basketball and still have a worse bracket than a pre-k kid who picked the teams by mascots.

Here at The Roar, we are doing a school-wide bracket competition where the winner will receive a $15 Buffalo Wild Wings gift card.  Happy Madness!
